Susan GarwoodHCA Healthcare

Dr. Garwood completed her internal medicine training at Vanderbilt University and her Pulmonary and Critical Care training at the Medical University of South Carolina. She practices advanced bronchoscopy at Centennial Thoracic Surgical Associates in Nashville TN and serves as the Thoracic Oncology Medical Director in the HCA Tri-Star Health Division and as the National Physician Director for the Pulmonary Service Line for the HCA Enterprise.
In her role she has launched over 100 incidental/screening programs across HCA’s 184 hospital footprint over the last 2 years culminating in over 1400 cancers found last year alone from use of an internally built natural language processing over read of CT imaging. She was an early adopter of robotic navigational bronchoscopy and has led the country in volume with over 800 robotic cases completed to date and continues to work to fine tune peripheral navigational bronchoscopy programs across HCA. Her passion is early detection of lung cancer and health care disparities. To that end, she along with HCA are piloting with Johnson and Johnson a program to specifically increase screening rates in African American through EMR mining, care coordination and a behavioral science toolkit for improved patient connectivity.
In her free time, she spends time with her two amazing children, travels and enjoys reading and hiking.
