Maria Lucia Madariaga, MD, is a general thoracic and lung transplant surgeon. She specializes in treating people with lung, airway, esophageal and mediastinal conditions. She is a founding member of the Complex Airway Center at the University of Chicago.
Dr. Madariaga graduated from the Harvard-MIT Program in Health Sciences and Technology at Harvard Medical School and completed her general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery training at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston MA. She also trained at the Mayo Clinic Thoracic Surgery and the Toronto General Hospital Lung Transplant programs.
Dr. Madariaga has extensive background in basic science and clinical research. She is the principal investigator of the ex vivo organ perfusion laboratory at the University of Chicago. She also spearheads the Frailty Initiative at UChicago to help vulnerable patients bounce back from surgery.
